2022-2023: Article 21 in the 21st Century: Modern Threats to the Human Right to Representation
The Journal of Human Rights was pleased to present its 2022-23 Symposium on Article 21 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on Thursday, November 17th, 2022. Article 21 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights provides that “[e]veryone has the right to take part in the government of his country, directly or through freely chosen representatives.” We welcome you to learn about the intersection of human rights and the American democratic process. We have some impressive speakers lined up for you this year, including professionals in this area of law and scholars.
For our 2022 Symposium on Human Rights and the Environment on Thursday, April 14th, 2022, JHR held a symposium for participants to learn about the intersection of human rights and the environment in a program led by globally renowned experts in the environment. Topics included conservation engagement with local communities, climate change and displacement, Article XI of the Illinois Constitution, and the international right to a healthy environment. We welcomed some impressive speakers for the conference, including internationally recognized human rights attorneys, environmental journalists, activists, and scholars.
We had some impressive speakers lined up, including former U.S. ambassadors, cease-fire negotiators, and internationally recognized human rights attorneys.
Our featured speaker was Ms. Sara Hossain, a human rights attorney who received the International Women of Courage Award in 2016 from the United States Secretary of State, John Kerry, “for empowering women and girls, and for giving voice to the voiceless in Bangladesh through [her] relentless legal advocacy.”
The Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law’s Journal of Human Rights and the Journal of Ethiopian Law, Addis Ababa University School of Law, are pleased to announce the “Human Rights and Access to Justice in Ethiopia” Symposium. Presenters and panelists will include leading scholars and practitioners from Ethiopia’s law schools, public institutions, and bar associations, as well as scholars and practitioners from the United States and from around the world.
On January 18, 2012, the Northwestern Journal of International Human Rights hosted Judge Virginia M.Kendall and Mr. T. Markus Funk in a presentation and discussion of their new book Child Exploitation and Trafficking: Examining the Global Challenges and U.S. Responses. Child Exploitation and Trafficking brings fresh thinking to a complicated area of the law. Each year, more than two million children around the world fall victim to commercial sexual exploitation. The numbers of children sexually abused for non-commercial purposes are even higher. Put simply, the growing, increasingly-organized epidemic of child exploitation demands an internationally coordinated response.
On January 17, 2012, Dr. Evan Lyon of Partners in Health presented on water rights and the cholera epidemic that has afflicted over half a million people and killed 7,000.
Israeli attorneys from Project Engage representing the Bedouin Community of the Negev have traveled to the United States to educate the legal community and political representatives about Israel’s Prawer Plan that will forcibly displace 40,000 Bedouin from their ancestral land.
